Where My Constituents At?

Brad and I went to see X-Men on Friday night. It was OK, not as good as the others. Anyway, Brad always leaves the TV on for the dog when we're gone. That night he set it to C-Span (you have to find a channel that is least likely to have a dog barking). When we got home I looked at the little bar to see the description of who was speaking. It was a reverend speaking on behalf of the Hip Hop Caucus. The what?! The Hip Hop Caucus. The bar went away and I waited for it to come back just to make sure that's what it really said. It did. It really said Hip Hop Caucus. It's real. Check, check, check, check it out. Hip Hop is All About Senate Process.

Fun with Army Regulations

Here's some excerpts from real Army Regulations:

* Many ineffective officers are attractive, handsome, decent, educated, honorable, intelligent and generous, and yet ineffective. It is perfectly proper to give an officer credit for his good qualities in the same letter or efficiency report which reveals his ineffectiveness as an officer.

- well, at least he's handsome

* Why there is an Army Writing Program: Too much Army writing does not communicate well.

- well, that sentence looks good

* Extreme, eccentric, or trendy haircuts or hairstyles are not authorized. If soldiers use dyes, tints, or bleaches, they must choose those that result in natural hair colors. Colors that detract from a professional military appearance are prohibited. Therefore, soldiers should avoid using colors that result in an extreme appearance. Applied hair colors that are prohibited include, but are not limited to purple, blue, pink, green, orange, bright (fire-engine) red, and fluorescent or neon colors.

- What!? Is that fire-engine red soldier!?

More to come as I find them....

Feeling Better

I am finally feeling better. It's a little cool and overcast here. It will probably rain soon. I haven't done anything interesting this weekend. I was going to go to the Renaissance Festival but just didn't seem to make it. I did watch the whole mini series Band of Brothers all the way through. I've seen it before but this time I could watch one episode right after the other because I have the box set. Well Brad has the box set. Actually I gave it to Brad as a Christmas present and when I got down here to Atlanta it was still in plastic. Is it bad that I bought someone a gift and then opened it?

No First Names

The funny thing about work is that no one has first names. Even the civilians are Mr. so and so or Ms. so and so. It's kind of funny that people who work together every day call each other Mr. or Ms. I guess it's a respect thing. The military personnel of course refer to each other by rank.

The last few days I have been working with LTC C*. He is the division chief for the Regulation and Legislation division in the JAG office. I know, I know...what can be more exciting than legislation and regulation! But it actually has been kind of interesting. I basically read draft revisions of Army regulations, and one NATO joint publication, and look for typos and clarity issues and any legal issues or conflicts the revisions might have with other regulations. After I find the issues, if any, I type up a memo with the JAG office's recommendations and LTC C* signs it and sends it off. So, my recommendations could end up in an Army Reg or a NATO publication. Of course, most of my recommendations are to correct grammar and typographical errors so it's not like I am changing the substance of the regulations but it still makes me feel like my job is important. I will be doing much of the same thing next week and then I'll switch to a new division on Monday June 5th.

I have a four day weekend this weekend because of the Memorial Day holiday. Yesterday, at work they had a little ceremony in front of the building dedicated to fallen soldiers. It was really touching especially when a bugler played Taps.

Well, Brad and I don't have any big plans this weekend. We are going to see the Da Vinci code later today but other than that we are just going to hang out and be lazy. Since I have been getting up at 6:00 in the morning everyday and driving an hour to and from work, hanging out and being lazy sound pretty good to me!

First Day of Work

Where to begin...

I got to the base around 8:30am. I met my sponsor Major I*. She is very nice and she introduced me to about 20 or 30 people. All I have to say is thank goodness they all have their names and ranks attached to the front of their uniforms or I wouldn't have any idea who anyone is. I think everyone should wear velcro name tags. It would make life a lot simpler and everyone would always know your name.

I spent a lot of today waiting for my password to be approved so I could sign onto networks and ask for more approvals and get a building pass. I am now "official" with a picture name badge and everything. When I got home Brad wanted to see my picture. He disapproved of me smiling in the picture. "You're not supposed to smile in these things," he said. I don't care. I was happy. It was the last thing I needed in order to be fully processed today. Well, I also need my two month vehicle pass but that is pending approval and should be ready tomorrow.

In between waiting for password approval and vehicle approval and building pass approval I went on a lot of tours. Major I* took me on a tour of the base, including a tour of the gym. Major I* is very enthusiastic about working out. Brad said, "so that means she could kick both our butts." I said probably, but I don't think it would take much. We also drove around the area around the base and we went on a tour of the building.

Most of the building is filled with cubicles. These are the tall cubicles you can't see over. There are also cubicles with doors on them which is something that I have never seen before. I'm sure the building is laid out pretty symmetrically but the cubicles are set up in a way that creates a bit of a maze. Major I* led me around the building and I swear we came back to the JAG office a different way every time. I start work tomorrow at 9:00am but I may have to get there at 8:00am with a compass just to find my way back. I am not in the JAG office that I linked in a previous post. Instead, I am in the Army Reserve Headquarters building. The building itself is relatively new. All over the building there are cases with uniforms and other military artifacts which represent the Army Reserve or the Army Reserve's accomplishments over the years. There is even a cannon on the bottom floor. There can't be that many legal interns who can say there is a cannon in the building where they work.

The highlight of the day, though, had to be when I found out where I am going to be working during the summer. They have assigned me an office, not a cubicle, an office. It is quite large and has two desks, one with the computer the other behind the chair with the printer. Oh, yeah I have my own printer. There is also a bookshelf, four chairs and a set of BDU's hanging on the back door. So I guess I could invite a whole bunch of people to hang out in my office. We could read the phonebook, dress up and print things. But we can't call anyone because my phone has been disconnected. It was an empty office for a while so they are working on getting it reconnected. The JAG office is getting another intern next week. I asked where the other intern was going to be and was told he was also getting an office, but I saw his office and it is a lot smaller than mine. So I guess getting there first has its perks.

Well that's all for today...I am working on reviewing and proposing regulations tomorrow with Lieutenant Colonel C*.

Today

Nothing too exciting happened today. Brad and I went shopping over in Newnan and got some ice cream in Peachtree City. Tonight was the series finale for Charmed. The series had become kind of stupid lately but I think they ended it well. Like the Will & Grace series finale, the Charmed finale showed what happens to the characters in the future so you weren't left wondering what would happen to them later. Well, time for bed. I'll write about my first day of work adventures tomorrow.

The Army

I am working for the Army JAG Corps this summer. I had to fill out a thousand forms, swear that I have no plans to overthrow the government in an affidavit and may have given away my first born child. I'm not really sure what I'll be doing this summer because they've been kind of vague but here's what I got in an email:

We don't have a handout on the intern program, but essentially you will be doing legal research and writing, witness preparation for trials and oral and written presentations. The actual work will vary based on the types of cases you are assigned.

I start on Monday, hopefully I passed the forms "test" and I will be given a vehicle pass to get through the gate and a building pass to get into the building.

And for all of you wondering:
1. No, I do not have to wear camo to work. I am a civilian.
2. No, I am not obligated to the Army. I have not joined the Army. I am an intern and a civilian.

This Summer

OK, I am not giving up. Plus I finally figured out how to take pictures and download them onto my computer so my blog will be more interesting or at least more colorful. I'm down here in Atlanta again. I just finished playing Age of Myths. If you have an army of trolls coming your way or you need some dwarves to be rescued I'm your person. Other than the computer game I have accomplished very little this week. I should be doing laundry or reading or taking the dog on walks but instead I am watching cable and playing games on my laptop. I don't have cable in Winston Salem. Well I pay six dollars for basic cable which pretty much just guarantees that the local channels will come in clearly. But I do get the TV Guide channel which is just kind of sad because I get to see the 15 channels I do have and the 45 channels I don't scroll by. It's really exciting down here...getting all the channels on the TV Guide channel!

Right now I'm watching the History channel now. It's a show about Leonardo da Vinci's military inventions. They have been playing something about da Vinci every night on the History channel because of the Da Vinci Code movie coming out tomorrow. I'm excited to see how the screenplay came out because I don't like the way that Dan Brown writes his books. He skips around right when we care about what will happen next. That doesn't create suspense that just creates annoyed readers. I'm not sure about Tom Hanks in the role as the main character. I like Tom Hanks but I think it was weird casting. I would have picked someone less well known. Funny, a commercial just came on for the Da Vinci Code.

Well I can ramble on for a while but I think I'll stop here and post a picture of a tiger who sleeps just like Penny...upside down and pressed up against the wall.

Happy New Year and all that Stuff

I had a pretty good break...I got a digital camera for Christmas, fun fun...now back to school. I had 4 classes today which is a pretty rough way to start a semester. I am not sure about what I am taking yet because I am on a few waitlists so I'll elaborate later when I am sure about my schedule. I already have about 50 pages of reading to get to so clearly this blog post is a stalling tactic. I've got myself set up in my cube in the library and ready to go. So I guess it's back to school. Hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Exam Antics

I left my cubbie to talk to someone about the paper requirements. While I was standing at the table a law student popped out of the paper "recycle trash can" to scare some students who were making copies at the copy machine near the bin. It was hilarious. I wish I had a video of it...no one expects someone to pop out of the recycle bins. The funniest part was that there were a whole bunch of students who had been sitting 10 feet away in full sight of the bin and nobody saw Keith get in there. Wow...we are all getting really tired and punchy.

You Might be a Law Student During Exams If:

10. The only way you know it's Christmas time is that there is an angel tree in the library entrance.
9. You are actually annoyed that the library is only open until midnight on Friday and Saturday nights.
8. Because the library closes so "early" you leave with fellow students and find a classroom to study in until 2am.
7. You don't know what day of the week it is but you do know that it is "Evidence Day."
6. The best thing that happened to you all week is the Dean letting you into a locked interview suite so you could take your 3 hour "take away" exam in peace and quiet.
5. The best thing that happened to you last week were the donut holes that someone brought into your Federal Income Tax exam.
4. You obsessively check the "away messages" of your fellow classmates to find out how much more or less prepared they are for your exam.
3. You begin to blatantly disregard the "no food" policy of the library and have cookies, pretzels and chocolate donuts in your library carrel.
2. You begin to blatantly disregard the "no drinks" policy of the library and routinely walk in with Starbucks coffee or bottles of sodas that aren't in spill proof containers.

And the number one way to tell if you might be a law student during exams:

1. You constantly daydream about being a princess or even one of the actors in the Swiffer commercial because then you wouldn't be taking law school exams.

Exams are Over

Today I finished my last exam, Banking Law...that makes 5. My computer didn't want to cooperate with the exam software at first so I started and finished 10 minutes after everyone else. That's OK it's over now.

Now I have to focus on my paper. I have 8 pages of what should be about a 20 to 25 page paper. I'm hoping I can get out at least another 5 or 6 tonight and then finish up and polish tomorrow.

Once my paper is done I'm done. So here I am Jen v. Paper.

Who will be left standing on Friday?

Damn Capitalists

One exam down (Federal Income Tax) 4 more exams and a paper to go...

I am now trying to teach myself Real Property Security...this is hard because it requires me to have learned something in my Property class that I took last year...shoot, knew there was a catch...

I have decided that I hate Capitalism and personal property ownership...I'm moving to China or Cuba or North Korea...no Real Property Security there, no Sir!

Me and My Paper

Or My Paper and Me...I might write a song about it...it has become my buddy...

No wait, that's bane of my existence. 25 pages due...I have 7 which is 3 more than I had when the day started. Just 18 more pages to go. When I am finished I might burn all of the cases and statutes that I printed off of Westlaw and Lexis (sorry reclyly type folks, if you were writing this you'd burn your papers too...hey ashes are biodegradable aren't they?!)

Just under 2 hours and I have to put down my paper and start teaching myself Federal Income Tax. Then I get to study for exams and write my paper at the same time. Is this multitasking?

I will close with the IM "Away Message" of a friend of mine: So nothing is certain but death and taxes...Can we add death from the tax exam as another certainty?

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like...

Exam time....Just kidding....Christmas is the word you were looking for. Since Brad took the dog to Atlanta I have had no compelling reason to study at home so I have been spending a lot of time in the school library. Being in the library all day every day can be a bit depressing but today they put up a Christmas tree just inside the library entrance. It has no lights on it but it does have tinsel and garland and ornaments which makes it sparkly. Last year, because of exams and the very few days that I spent here in Winston after exams, I did not put up a Christmas tree and the only decorations I had out were three Disney ornaments that my mom got for me. This year is no different only this time I have a wreath and some snowmen that my aunt and cousin made for me. So I am happy that, although exams might be depressing, the library has brought me some Christmas cheer and every time I walk past the tree I can say "ooh sparkly."

Law School Is Not Fun

Or at least exams and papers are not fun. Right now I am sitting in a carrel in the library and I happen to be sitting next to an LLM student. This is someone who is getting a Legal Law Masters...this is one degree beyond a law degree. Right now he is studying something for some exam he has coming up. All I keep thinking is that he has already graduated from law school. He finished all his papers and exams and got a degree and for some reason decided to punish himself further with more school. What was he thinking!? I finished college and I didn't have to take another exam ever again yet here I am in law school. What was I thinking!?

Me and the Chief Justice

Chief Justice Roberts came to Wake Forest as one of the three judges who judged the Stanley Moot Court Competition. The other two judges were Circuit Courts of Appeals judges from the 3rd and 5th circuits. A moot court competition involves writing an appellate brief and then arguing for the appellant and appellee (plaintiff and defendant). The 16 winners from the first round advance and then the 8 winners from the second round and so on until there were 2 competitors left and these were the competitors who argued in front of the Chief Justice and the Circuit Court Judges. After the competition the students were invited to a reception with the judges. Poor chief Justice Roberts was surrounded by students the whole time. I imagine that is what it must look like for a rock star to be swarmed by fans. He stopped every two seconds to take a picture and camera flashes were going off everywhere. That must be what it feels like to be surrounded by paparazzi. The marshals just let us follow him around and take pictures. He really was very gracious. So here's my picture with the Chief Justice. I also shook his hand and then tried to move out of the way. But he turned around and ended up right in front of me again. He smiled and said, "I've already taken a picture with you," and moved on. After my friends and I had gotten our pictures we walked back to the law school from the undergraduate campus where the reception had been held. We stopped to look at our pictures in the digital camera and giggled with glee (even the guys) at our new "celebrity" pictures. I imagine we were like 13 year old girls who had just been able to get a picture taken with their favorite teenage rock star.

Contacts

I don't think I've posted this yet but I got contacts about a month ago. I had no trouble putting them in but I did have a bit of trouble learning to take them out. I love them...no more cleaning glasses and prescription sun glasses and glare...

The first thing I did when I got my contacts: I bought cheap sunglasses; it was great!

Scary Worm Snake Thing

OK scared myself on a nighttime walk with Penny again but this was for a good reason. Right there on the sidewalk was what looked like a worm or a snake or something. It was thin and tapered on the ends, it didn't appear to have a head, it was dark brown or black, it appeared to be smooth maybe even wet, and it moved in waves sideways. I ran away from it, the dog went to the bathroom and by the time I came back it was gone...Probably slithered into a bush or the grass. I searched the internet to find out what it could be but I couldn't find anything that matched it. It might be an earthworm but I didn't think they moved in waves like that. I thought they inched along. The best way to describe this would be a very small eel. It was dark so I may not be describing it exactly how it would look in the light but I thought this was very freaky. Fifty points to whoever finds out what this might be so I can walk in the grass without fear.

Scaredy Jen

Last night I took the dog out before bed. It was cold so I put the hood up on my sweatshirt and I was startled by a large dark shape that I saw out of the corner of my eye....

I was scared of my own shadow, wah wah...

Fetch

Drop It, Give It and Fetch are not commands that Penny ever learned. Penny runs after a ball if you throw it but she probably won'tt bring it back or if she does she'll stop about 2 feet away from you and back up whenever you lean forward to get the ball. I think she likes running after it but she doesn't quite get that she has to give it back in order for it to be thrown again.

Tonight I decided to try to teach her fetch. I got a handful of bits of jerky and threw the ball. She decided jerky was better than the ball and just stared at my hand with the jerky in it. I went down the hall to get the ball and tried to shove it into her mouth. That didn't work. So I put up the jerky and threw the ball. She ran to get it and then ran back stopping about 2 feet short. I gave her a jerky bit and she dropped it. This went on for another 10 or so tries and she brought the ball back everytime.

Somewhere around try number 10 she decided to just hang around and not run after the ball so I grabbed a nearby stuffed squirrel and threw it. She didn't go after it either. So I went down the hall but this time Penny knew what I was after. For some reason this human really likes gross dog slobbered balls and will give treats for them. So she ran down the hall and grabbed the ball before I could get there. So I walked back down the hall and she followed me with the ball. I gave her a treat.

I threw the ball a few more times and it was clear this she was getting tired. Good, a sleeping dog can't get into trouble. I threw the ball one last time and promised the dog (not that she could understand me) that she would get a big treat, that is, what was left of the jerky bits. She ran down the hall and grabbed both the squirrel and the ball, not an easy feat for a little dog, and came running back very pleased with herself. It was so cute, I bet she thought that if she gets a tiny bit of jerky for bringing the ball back then she must get something really good for bringing back all the stuffed animals in the hall. She was right, I gave her the rest of the jerky bits. Now she's asleep...life is good.

The Wedding and such...

Laura, a highschool friend of mine, got married on Monday. She and her fiance, got married on the beach in North Carolina. The weather was great and we narrowly missed Ophelia. Now she is Mrs. Johnson! Congrats again, Laura and Branden.

Unfortunately, while Laura was getting married I got the flu. I think I got it from Brad since he was sick last week so I've decided his new nickname should be "outbreak monkey." Yesterday everything hurt and I was flying back so during my layover I had my feet up on my carry-on in the airport and the guy working the counter at my gate asked me if I was OK. I said I was fine and that I just didn't feel well. I'm sure the rest of the people waiting for my plane thought that that was fantastic. I really hope that I didn't make any of my fellow plane passengers sick. I'm feeling better now though. I just have a runny nose and a little cough. I usually only get sick once a year during the summer (knock on wood) so hopefully that was my once a year illness.

Space, the Final Frontier...

Today in Evidence I got to answer a question with, "Well, the judge could take judicial notice of the fact that Vulcans don't exhibit emotions." It was the first time in a few weeks that I really enjoyed my Evidence class.

This Week

I am sitting in Banking Law which is more of a history class. It's a two hour class on Thursday nights and right now we are on break. I am really tired so I'm not sure if I can stay awake through the next hour but it is so cold in here that I can't see how I could fall asleep if I tried. Maybe that's why they keep it so cold.

In other news:

Wake Forest accepted 10 displaced Tulane and Loyola New Orleans law students to attend Wake this semester until their schools are opened again. I only share 1 class with some Tulane students and that's Federal Income Tax. Wake has also been collecting money to send to the Red Cross, as well as food and clothes.

This Saturday I am flying to Norfolk and then meeting Brad at the airport to drive to Corolla NC in the Outer Banks to attend my friend Laura's Wedding. The wedding is on Monday so I am skipping school but I have asked some people to let me borrow their notes so I should be fine. I'm excited about going to the beach. The last time I was at the beach was in 1999. I never grew up going to the beach so I don't think I'm "beach people" so I don't miss it but it's still fun to go once in a while.

Well class is starting again so I better start taking notes on the Federal Reserve.

Gas Shortage

Apparently 1/4 of the nation's oil and natural gas comes from the Gulf, whether it is actually drilled in the gulf or comes by boat is unimportant. Also, I thought gasoline was shipped in those tanker trucks but apparently there is some sort of pipeline that runs from Louisiana up the east coast and that pipeline has been shut off. Not only has our oil been shut off but the oil refineries have no electricity so no oil is being refined.

I watched the six o'clock news where we were informed of a possible gas shortage and they said Atlanta has reported that it will run out of gas shortly. Brad said that Hartsfield (Atlanta) airport might have to cancel flights because of lack of fuel and that planes are flying emergency jet fuel to Charlotte and Atlanta. Brad has spent the last two weeks in Wisconsin for training and he is supposed to fly home this Saturday but he may end up stuck in Wisconsin.

Later on the eleven o'clock news they warned that North Carolina might run out of gas. The governor has asked that people not drive unless they have to. The state is limiting the number and type of vehicle that responds to emergency calls and the governor has asked that no one make Labor Day travel plans. The eleven o'clock news further reported the enormous gas price increases.

OK, now you have my attention. I have a little less than half a tank of gas in my car and like most people I fill up when the gas light comes on but I decided that the longer I wait the more it will cost me to fill up my car and the less likely there will be any gas to put in it. So I told Penny to behave, grabbed my keys and headed down to the Shell station. The price for regular 87 is 2.99. It was 2.29 two days ago. It cost me $30.00 to fill up a little more than half a tank of gas. This is crazy.

I think the news stations are not helping matters. Of course a gas shortage is news but they also reported that there are reserves that should last a few weeks. I don't believe that anymore. I think all of their reporting is going to create a panic and there is going to be a run on gas stations a la the run on banks during the depression. It's gonna get ugly. Brad sent me an email stating that there was a riot up north when a gas station boosted the gas price by .50 cents while people were pumping gas.

Week Two

Well, the novelty of the new semester has worn off and I find myself asking questions such as, "Is it December yet?"

On a related note: Should I be worried that the class reading that I find most interesting is for Federal Income Tax? I don't mind reading ten page opinions in Tax. Two page opinions in Evidence, on the other hand, are about one and a half pages too long. Maybe I should be a tax lawyer....

Friday, August 26, 2005

Day 5

Fridays are my most relaxed days. I have one class at 12pm and then I'm out for the weekend. I had tax class today. Tax is actually turning out to be pretty interesting and useful.

I came home from school and had lunch and then I invited over a foreign business student and his girlfriend to see Penny. William is a graduate student in the business school and he lives in my apartment complex. He saw me walking Penny one day and asked if she was a corgi. I was surprised he knew what kind of dog she was but he explained to me that his girlfriend has a corgi in Taiwan. His girlfriend was visiting him this week and next week and she wanted to come over to see Penny. I think she misses her corgi named Bean. They told me that corgis are very popular in Japan. I told them corgis are not very popular here. Penny acted as crazy as usual and I apologized for her antics but they just laughed and said that Bean acts crazy too. William said corgis must all act the same. She had such a good time with them that she is taking a long nap right now.

Later tonight I am going to a luau thrown by my apartment complex. Each year the manager of my apartment complex throws a luau/barbecue to welcome the new residents and to welcome back the old. Most tenants are students and if they keep their apartment they usually go away for the summer.

Day 4

I don't have class on Thursday until 3pm but I was at school earlier yesterday to help with the Women in Law table at the 1L organization fair. All of the student organizations had tables and shared information with the new 1L class.

Yesterday I had Evidence at 3pm and then I had two new classes. Debtor/Creditor Law at 4pm and Banking Law at 6pm.

Debtor/Creditor law is going to be really interesting. The professor is probably one of the funniest, most quirky professors I've ever had, not just in law school. Banking law should also be really interesting and hopefully not too hard since I already know a lot about mortgage banking law.

Thursdays are late nights. I get out at 7:50. I guess that's the trade off for starting school so late. I won't have to look for a parking space at 3pm either so that will be nice.

Wednesday, August 24, 2005

Day 3

Today I had Tax again but I was a few minutes late because I drove around for 10 minutes looking for a parking space, argghhh... Hopefully that will change when everyone's free parking pass expires on August 31st.

Tax was slightly more interesting today and I answered some questions which made me think of more questions which made me realize that the tax code doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense.

After Tax I went to a Career Services presentation on interviewing and resumes, etc.... They kept giving advice like:
  • Be able to recite your resume or any part of your resume at will.
  • Learn all about the firm that you will be interviewing with and be able to discuss different aspects of the firm at will
  • Learn all about the person that you will be intervieiwing with and be able to discuss different aspects of that person's life at will
  • Before you leave, take a look in the mirror and make sure your hem is straight and no buttons are loose
All of this kind of made me think that the whole interview process is a bit of a joke. You are there to perform like a circus elephant and they are there to be entertained with your antics. It reminded me of a royal court fool. Pretty much everyone they interview will be the same; a young man or woman who goes to law school who has taken almost all of the same classes with similar grades who is looking for a summer job. The difference is going to be how entertaining you are. If I go through all of that trouble, I think memorizing inane facts about things that I can promtly forget within minutes after they are needed should be listed under "skills" on my resume. Oh well, there was free pizza at the presentation so that made it worth it.

Day 2 - What Can Brown do for You?

For the two weeks before school started I stayed up until 1 or 2 am, sometimes even later. I guess I'm a night person. It's been hard waking up this week but the dog makes a good alarm. Yesterday I had my first day of Federal Income Tax. The book is actually funny; the first line on page one says, "Congratulations, you've taken the first step, you've opened the book, " or something like that. The professor, on the other hand, talks slowly and has a very soothing voice which could put you to sleep. This is not good since I am sleepy already. I also had my second day of Evidence. The professor is really funny. We watched a short movie in which he starred as a detective telling a story about a crime and showing all of the evidence that he collected. Then he picked students to submit the evidence to the court and other students to object to the evidence. I think that class is going to turn out to be really fun.

On a different note, I ordered my textbooks online and they were supposed to be delivered yesterday so I was surprised when I went home and didn't find any books. I looked up the UPS tracking information online and found that the address had been wrong or the apartment number missing and they were investigating the proper address. So I called UPS and gave them the proper address. Somewhere between the publisher (the place I bought the books from) and the UPS the address got mixed up. They said they would send the package out again and it would be delivered Wednesday. I was a little angry but what can you do so I went home, read a little and fell asleep on the couch. Hey, remember I said I was tired. I was woken up to the dog barking and the door knocking. I looked through the peep hole and saw a UPS man. "How long had I been asleep!?" I opened the door and signed for the box.

"It's not Wednesday is it?, " I asked.

"Huh?" said the UPS man.

"I called earlier and they said they would redeliver the package on Wednesday."

"Oh....no, I redelivered it tonight."

"Thanks," I said.

Getting a box full of text books is a little like Christmas, but not.

First Day of Classes cont'd...

I had two classes today: Real Propety Security and Evidence. Both classes were actually pretty straightforward; the profs pretty much just lectured. They both seem like they aren't going to be that bad. I was actually supposed to have 3 classes today but the last one was cancelled by the professor. Not too much to say about the classes but the good news is that I could answer nearly all of each profs' questions, which means I read pretty thouroughly. I didn't raise my hand to answer all of the questions though, because nobody likes a know-it-all.

I've completed all of my reading through Wednesday so I don't have any reading that I have to do. I'm just going to organize my class notes and then fix dinner and watch TV.

First Day of Classes

Today is the first day of classes. I actually don't have class until 2pm on Mondays but I went to school this morning to sign up for a locker. First floor lockers are in a prime location and I wanted to make sure that I got one of those lockers and not something on the third floor. Unfortunately two parking lots were blocked off and nearly all of the 1Ls (first year students) were already at school when I got there so I had to park way over in the Undergrad campus. Oh well, the walk was good for me I guess, and I did get a first floor locker. I came home to have breakfast and read a little before school. More on my first day to come....
